Is There Spatial Mismatch in the Labor Market?

Fredrik Andersson, John Haltiwanger, Mark Kutzbach, Henry Pollakowski, and Daniel Weinberg investigate how job accessibility, measured by detailed information on residential location and transportation networks, affects the duration of unemployment spells. They focus on low income workers with strong job attachment who face mass layoffs, and find that better job accessibility substantially reduces the duration of joblessness.
