Washington, DC and environs. From the Tiger Mapping Service.
The segregation dataset found at this site was created by David Cutler, Edward Glaeser, and Jacob Vigdor. The data come from decadal Census data spanning the years 1890 to 1990. These data have been used in Cutler and Glaeser's Are Ghettos Good or Bad? (1997: Quarterly Journal of Economics 112:827-872) and Cutler, Glaeser and Vigdor's The Rise and Decline of the American Ghetto (1999: Journal of Political Economy 107:455-506).
In addition to the segregation data, supplemental city/metropolitan area data and the original ward and tract data used to construct the indices can be found below.
Users of the historical segregation data should cite The Rise and Decline of the American Ghetto. Users of the 1990 supplemental data should cite Are Ghettos Good or Bad?
A brief introduction to the segregation measures, supplemental data, and data samples can be found here.
Users of the segregation, supplementary, ward and/or tract datasets are asked to send mail to Jacob Vigdor, the custodian of this site. Users will be notified in the event of any updates or additions to the datasets. The following files are all in ASCII text format.
